Elena and Bonnie are helped out of a serious situation by Stefan. Jeremy invites Anna to a party in the woods, oblivious that she has other reasons for meeting him there. Bonnie and Grams work jointly with Stefan, Damon and Elena to get the tomb open. When they do, they may be all surprised by what they find.
Elena wakes up to find herself in a motel room and sneaks past a sleeping Ben to the doorway. Ben suddenly appears and compels her to quit trying to escape. However, Elena has Vervain and is immune, but plays along anyway - before making a run for it. At the boardinghouse, Damon is in the library examining the grimoire when Stefan enters, announcing that Elena was taking by Anna. Damon refuses to help get Elena back. Stefan apologizes for getting Katherine captured. Damon says he expects Elena is killed.
Ben threatens the girls just as Stefan arrives. Stefan tells Ben he needs to leave town otherwise, he will be killed. Grams demonstrates that she used a locator spell as a way to find them. Elena suggests the notion to let Damon have Katherine. Grams agrees to help open the grave provided that the other vampires are killed. Elena says she can convince Damon to work with them. At Duke's party, Elena and Damon have a rather difficult conversation with Matt and Caroline. Grams, Bonnie and Stefan are all waiting at the tomb entrance when Elena and Damon arrive. Tyler asks Jeremy for drugs, but his is rebuffed and called "the enemy of enjoyment". Anna shows up. Beyond the grave, Grammes lights torches that symbolize the elements and pours water onto the earth. Anna and Jeremy have a chat in the woods and she announces that she will be leaving city. They share a kiss and he sees her face change right before Ben knocks him out.
Matt and Tyler are having a discussion about Caroline. Caroline comes up and explains why she has been acting weird in front of Elena and Damon. Grams and Bonnie chant the spell together, the torches flare and then the tomb door opens. Stefan gets a fire ready to kill the vampires and Damon takes Elena into the grave. Elena voluntarily follows Damon, understanding he needs the influence.
Stefan locates Ben and Anna along with an unconscious Jeremy. Damon disappears while within the tomb, leaving Elena alone in a nearly completely dark tomb. Anna goes into the tomb. Grams declares that no vampires can come away from the grave. Stefan sets Ben on fire, killing him. Elena feels her way through the grave, tripping on desiccated vampires before running into Anna.
Upon returning home, Grams tells Bonnie not to worry. Jeremy says he doesn't have an memory of what happened, but when Elena leaves him, he types "vampires" into a search engine. Damon is mad and attacks Pearl within the motel room, recognizing that Anna always knew Katherine wasn't within the tomb. Anna says that Katherine did not care enough for Damon to contact him. Elena calls Stefan to ask about Damon. Stefan sits with his brother as he stares into the fire. Bonnie brings tea to Grams and thinks she is asleep before realizing she is passed away. Elena attempts to comfort a hysterical Bonnie. Within the tomb, the blood bag that Damon threw away rouses a vampire who's able to push the tomb door open and step out into the light read more.
