Nominated for 7 Emmys in its first five months, Law & Order SVU (Special Victims Unit) remains the achievement of NBC's hit Law & Order franchise. The creation of Law & Order founder Dick Wolf (former writer for hit TV shows such as Hill Street Blues and Miami Vice), Law & Order SVU is shot on location in New York City. It follows the original half-police drama/half-courtroom dilemma format that made its precursor a wonderful success, however SVU focuses specifically on sexually based crimes
Law & Order SVU tells the story of a group of committed investigators who benefit the elite group called the Special Victims Unit. Capt. Mark Cragen (Dann Florek) heads up the unit which includes four regular investigators - Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni), Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay), John Munch (Richard Belzer), and Odafin Tutuola (Ice-T). While analyzing rapes, killings, and other horrible crimes, the investigators usually check with police psychologist Dr. George Huang (B.D. Wong) who gives special insight into the heads of alleged predators. Once the investigators collect the required research, they turn their case to Assistant District Attorney Casey Novak (Diane Neal) who brokers deals and prosecutes the cases that put these nefarious criminals behind bars
The Law & Order SVU DVD features a range of dramatic episodes including the series premiere "Payback" when a cab lloyd irvin driver is identified stabbed to death along with his genitals cut off. When investigators Stabler and Benson investigate, they learn that the man is a former soldier from the conflict and that he was a rapist. Benson, a daughter or son of rape, is sympathetic to the actions of rape victims, and Stabler should keep her from crossing the line to protect the likely suspects Other distinctive symptoms from Season 1 contain "Sophomore Jinx" in which a college student's murder investigation is blocked by the college when the SVU suspects a s) of the school baseball team, and "The Third Guy" in which an elderly woman is tied up and raped in her apartment, but the investigation takes a unique perspective when the initial suspects are eliminated and a new perpetrator enters the picture
