Daya Bay Nuclear Power Plant says OK to on-site feasibility study for a reactor neutrino experiment

On September 17, in an official reply to the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), the China Guangdong Nuclear Power Group (CGNPG), owner of the Daya Bay and Ling Ao Power Plants, agreed the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) to perform on-site feasibility study for a reactor neutrino experiment designed to measure the mixing angle q13. A preliminary study is now completed. Four different options of laying out the tunnels for connecting the near and far underground experimental halls have been identified. Once the final choice is selected, detailed survey of the site will be carried out in the approved feasibility study.

The Institute of High Energy Physics at Beijing, is one of the institutes of CAS. The Daya Bay project is supported by the CAS, the Chinese National Science Foundation, and the Ministry of Science and Technology. About forty physicists from China, Hong Kong and the United States are currently involved in the project.
